Cost of compressed air calculator
What your compressed air costs a year, per 1,000 cubic feet and per cfm of demand. Start from the air you use or from the power your compressors draw.
How it is worked out
Compressed air is paid for in electricity. Starting from the air you use, the power it takes is that air times the power it takes to make each 100 scfm. Starting from the power, it is what the compressors draw. Either way, the yearly cost is that power times the hours they run and your electricity cost.
"Each scfm of demand" is what one more cubic foot a minute, all year, adds to the bill: a useful yardstick for a new air user, a leak or an open blow-off.
What it leaves out
- Dryers, cooling water and other equipment that runs with the compressors.
- Maintenance, repairs and the cost of the equipment itself, often a quarter of the total over its life.
- Demand charges on the electricity bill.
